Art Center Nabi and SOMA Museum of Art present A.L.I.C.E Museum 2009:Future School that encourages creativity of children who will be the leaders of next generation is on view from May 1 to June 21, 2009.

It showcase 21 artworks and consists of 5 sections-
▲Artistic Studio ▲Lively Station ▲Intelligent Platform ▲Creative Engine ▲Eco-Friendly Wonderland.

In Artistic Studio, children create artworks through media art workshops with artists. In Lively Station, Children play game as well as massage their parents through . In Intelligent Platform, kids talk to which is a 5m high Stelarc’s head model and also listen to his songs. In Creative Engine, children explore diverse levels of education such as which creates music performance and which produce 3D puppeteers. In Eco-Friendly Wonderland, children can question about the human relationships and virtual life in digital ecology.

Art Center Nabi's COMO presents the German visual artist Robert Siedel's solo exhibition. Seidel blurs the traditional lines between organic and ebullient work teems with an almost living energy as he studied the shapes and patterns created by an environment and then overlays that with his own graphic style.

In his films Seidel is interested in pushing the boundaries of organic beauty and emotions with visual and scientific technology. Audiences will meet the blur of boundaries in emotion and technology at COMO which is a public and non-public space at the same time.

Art center nabi will showcase an exhibition ‘Sound of [a:i] Island’ as a part of from Jan 14 to Feb 27. Project [I], kids becoming artists by themselves with cooperations of artists, is an annual arts social contribution program started from 2005.

Project[I] 4.0 held three different workshops; International Mongolia School, Ansan Multiculture Center and Goseong branch school of Yemi Elementary School in Jeongseon.

Children artists of will present results of their 4-months-length workshop as a musical and performance. Teens of International Mogolia School will stage a musical ‘Thanks…daddy’ and kids Ansan Multiculture Center will present a performance which integrated dance, music and screen media arts. Also musical instruments made by Goseoug Branch School of Yeme Elementary School children and a documentary film which shows the process of becoming an [I] artist will showcase from Jan 14 to Feb 27 at Art Center Nabi (free of admission, closed on weekends)

Art Center Nabi, the specialized institution for Media Arts, and SK Telecom will hold a showcase at ‘COMO’, a extended media platform from Dec 1, 2008 to Jan 15, 2009.

Streets crowded with Christmas trees and decorations make people go fluttering at the end of the year. However, current economic crisis hardly let people feel the excitement. Therefore, the virtual tree is projected to share the burden in reality. The cost of material Christmas trees will be donated to neighbors in need. Three media artists will present warm Christmas images on the screens instead of a real Christmas tree.

▲ by Kye Ryoon Han is a 3D image showing bright and cheerful mood of Christmas. ▲ by Joo Myung Song is a tranquil feast of simple Christmas flowering tree, and his another artwork expresses twinkling and touches of dolls, toys, stars by images. ▲ by Jihoon Byun uses algebraic functions to form different types of Christmas trees by every fifteen seconds.

This project held at COMO is a small sharing not only for citizens but also for neighbors in need.

Art Center Nabi, a specialized institution for Media Arts, showcases new experience and communication with Hangul (the Korean character) and new media. is on view from October 7th through November 18th.

▲The section shows aesthetic approaches of Hangul- which comprises works that show typography and visualization of Hangul. Included are signboard abstracted installation that utilized moving Hangul fonts by Seung Kwan No, a co-project by Won Koh and Jihoon Byun which incorporated concrete poetry and interactive media art. ▲ Sound art works that attempt rhythmical aspects of Hangul are on view at the section. ▲ The section shows works of interactive storytelling and communication that emphasize semantic appearances of Hangul. Included are works by Lisa Lee trying new approaches in storytelling through daily activities such as using chopsticks and hair brushing.

The opening reception on October 7th will show performance of the MilMul Modern Dance Company that expresses the beauty, excellency and originality of Hangul with 3D stereo-scopic images, calligraphy and human body.

JungShin Byung by Won Koh and Jihoon Byun

This is a cooperative work of concrete poetry writer Won Koh and new media artist Jihoon Byun. The work gives interaction of Byun into the concrete poetry idea of Ko. A letter "jung" and "shin" is produced by a spectator's breath, and blows it into "Byung(1.bottle)". The bottle is just a bottle itself, but as they put "jung" and "shin" into "byung", all of these three combined becomes "jungshin(mental) byung(2.disease)", which means psychopathic.

Soothe is an interactive installation that was created by questioning the introspective notion of the mundane gesture - brushing hair. It is an interactive installation that interprets the gesture of brushing into a typographical embodied poem. This interpretation is the process of visualizing the mundane unconscious action to beauty. The poem deals with a physical object a brush that induces clear intuitive interaction as interface.

Bonding Company is an experimental zone of communication and realationship.
It consists of four different sections, which are OPENING, SHARING, SPARKLING, and EXPANDING.

It will be held from September 4th-6th at Jeju island as a partner of LIFT Asia 2008 conference. Seven interactive installations will be shown at the Bonding Company.

Zone 1. Opening

When people meet for the first time, they start to interact by introducing themselves. They can slowly open themselves up through the introduction. This is a zone where the artwork meets the audience and start to open up to each other.

Art Center Nabi COMO presents JiHoon Byun's "Haeundae" from August 8 to September 14.

Haeundae beach is one of the most famous beach across Korea. It is locaed on the eastern part of Busan city, the southernmost end of the Korean peninsula. The name of "Haeundae" derived from "Haeun", the name of the great Scholar Choi Chi-won under the pen name of Ko Un during the late period of the Silla Kingdom. Allegedly, Scholar Choi Chi-won carved a 3-letter "Haeundae" on the southern rockwall of Dongbaek Island, being fascinated with the exquisite wonders of the Haeundae Dalmaji area, on his way to Mt. Gaya deserting his government post.

JiHoon Byun(www.phantasian.com) has featured works to connect two different spaces by network.

by Byun delivers the realtime sound and image of the popular beach to COMO at Seoul. This work invites citizens to enjoy the sea, sky and sound of Haeyndae beach in city.

Takagi Masakatsu is a visual artist and musician whose work knows no aesthetic borders.

He has presented video installations and performed live at art spaces around the world. He also produces music videos, as well as music for commercials and film.

Res magazine named him one of the 2006 RES 10, an annual selection of emerging artists who will influence the worlds of film, video, design, advertising, music, and media art in the upcoming year and beyond.

Project I

Project I is a project which enables chIldren to discover the Incredibility within themselves by Interactive conversation through medIa. It is now an annual project held by Art Center Nabi that started from 2005. It is a project that focuses on the "I," which sounds like the Korean word for child.

Project I 3.0, was held in 2007 as the third incarnation of a program designed to equip children from poor backgrounds with the proper tools necessary to have a chance as artists. Participated children of Project I 3.0 lived outside the Seoul area and attends "study rooms" -- a place where poor children, who generally cannot afford tuition at hakwon, receive instruction from volunteers.

In 2006, Project I 2.0 opened a space for 30 Refugee Youths from North Korea, where they could join with creative artists and Project I 2.0 “I” artists. During 4 months, North Korean Refugee Youths from 3 different welfare centers around Seoul have learned and experienced how to find their own paths to express and identify themselves through this project by Art Center Nabi.They not only experienced how to adapt Korean culture which is very new for those just started their lives in South Korea, but also learned how to express and contribute their cultural mind and knowledge to others.The results were presented from October 17 till November 12, 2006 at Art Center Nabi.

Project I 1.0 workshop was made by 51 children who live in deprived areas such as Bongchun, Sungnam, Ansan, Incheon, Yongin and 13 artists. It included media workshops and the Riding Media Van program. Children experienced the process to become “I artists” with artists who listened to them carefully through Project I 1.0.Because of Riding Media Van program, these series of process made opportunities to meet and share ideas of our children with others and connected children from 5 areas to each other. The exhibition was organized by SK Telecom and directed by Art center Nabi and Busrugy. The results of Project I 1.0 was presented from November 10 to December 10,2005 at Art center Nabi.

Showcase 2007

Showcase 2007 was a platform of Nabi academy, community, and exhibition. Seven unique artist communities represented their yearly projects and Nabi Academy students exhibit creative works developed from the classes. And, free open lectures and workshops opened a door of media art more widely for the public.

Nabi Showcase 2007 was a program introducing education system at Art Center Nabi. During this 2 week program, 7 different artist communities, which are called 'Nabi community' as a group, had opportunities to present their projects to the public. And, Nabi academy students opened their workshop projects and developements. This was the place where people shared thier idea and interest.

Art Center Nabi tried to contribute new media art based on high technology. Since its establishment, Nabi invited internationally well known artists, engineers, and professionals for the exhibitions and lectures. Through all the process, Art Center Nabi realized well programmed education is essential for the new media stream. Therefore, Nabi Academy, one of the Art Center Nabi's public programs, was opened at 2006. Nabi academy is the place presenting digital media courses that never had been really tried at any other institute. Students can develop their not only artistic talents but also technically knowledge at the center. Nabi is trying to open the door for those who want to be creative in art and technology.

Art Center Nabi is the 'center' where people can share their knowledge and experiences. Nabi community was developed under the reason. Since 2003, nabi supported 3 communities, and year 2006, 4 more communities got supports from Nabi.

COMO is an extended media platform located in Seoul SKT Tower and Daejeon SKT Building in Korea. Since December 2004, the LED display has been known as a unique multi-media installation which integrates art and architecture to create new convergence.

It is not only a typical urban screen blinking an impersonal message, but also a window being wildly opened to different art-works in public. Art center nabi has been shown various public art programs that are filled with interactive communication between the COMO and public.

COMO consists of four large LED screens; three at Seoul SKT Tower and another at Daejoen SKT building. Its contents change on monthly basis.

Media Art; the past joins the present

It was the first exhibition of year 2008 to feature at COMO.

"Good Morning Mr. Orwell" by pioneer video artist Nam-Joon Paik invited audiences to large public screens on seven continents that included the COMO at SKT Tower in Seoul. It launched at the same time with other venues on seven continents(New York standard) with the "Finding pink time 2007 (the media clock) at 9pm on January 29, 2008.

"Finding pink time 2007" is made by kid artists from Project I 3.0 which is art participating philanthropy annual program organized by Art Center Nabi.

This exhibition was co-organized by Art Center Nabi and Hangaram Design Museum. It was a special exhibition that combined media art and design for children. A total of 30 media artists and designers have been invited to the exhibition.
The title stands for "Alive Liquid Interactive Creative Expressive Museum" which clearly state the characteristics of this show.Children were encouraged to express themselves in a variety of space and hands-on programs.

A special exhibition aimed to reflect on the current state of connectivity and relationship among people, environment,clusters of information, and objects in the networked condition of everyday life. Works in the exhibition questioned the very concept of mobility, connectivity, locality, kinship, and physicality whather it is poetic contemplation or piercing critique.

as the first exhibition project in aligh with Mobile Asia initiave, also included the winners of international competition held in 2006. Those works made by, made for, and experienced with mobile devices were shown at Art Center Nabi, Resfest Film Festival and DMB channel Blue.

Intermediae-Minbak

Media workshop and exhibition for four nights and five days in collaboration between Intermediae of Spain and Art Center Nabi of Korea.Changing the existing concept of the form of exhibition, this joint project served as a place for vivid cultural exchange.

The word Minbak means accomodation for homestay in Korean.

Korean media artists (Jihoon Byun, Minha Yang, Kichul Kim, Kim Joon, Seungjoon Choi, Woosuk Jang, Taejoong Kim, Yangachi) and about 50 Spanish students from five art colleges in Bilbao, Valencia and Cuenca met each other at 'Intermediae-Minbak', a soft platform where they can exchange the ideas.

Held February 14-17, 2007 in ARCO 2007 at Madrid, Spain.

Emotional Cities; How are you today?

Swedish artist Erik Krikortz's project 'Emotional Cities' is now featuring at COMO.
In this project, the feelings of a city's population are registered every day as a color-coded emotional index. Upon entering the site, people are asked the question "How do you feel today?", and able to indicate their emotions with just one click. This project was held in collaboration with Cyworld(http://www.cyworld.com), the most popular on-line social networking system in South Korea.

COMO was specially chosen due to its easy access to the public. As a part of SKT building at Ulgiro, COMO is consisted of three large LED screens.

Art Center Nabi was established in December 2000 to lead the way towards the coexistence of humans and new media that is the centerpiece of art and culture in the 21st century.

Just like the metaphor of nabi , which is the Korean word for butterfly, Art Center Nabi provides exhibitions, support for creation, education, and research in new media art and technology. Art Center Nabi tries to devise new and effective ways to disseminate media arts to the public at large. Balancing creativity with critical perspectives, we seek to contribute to the humanity and diversity of techno-culture today.
